Hobby Horse

Hobby Horse

At a stall that sold only horse-themed items, I found a beautiful hand-carved rocking horse toy with articulated teeth and lips, glass eyes, brass fittings and what looks to be a real horsehair tail, for sale at the shockingly low price of £2.75. "Do you know who made it?" I asked the two women working there. "No idea," they replied.

That piece, because of the articulated mouth, should be termed 'automata'. The British craft of automata [http://www.cabaret.co.uk/] has a long history of political (and carnival) comment. Your hobbyhorse is both a crafty concealment and a fascinating artifice. Cabaret Mechanical Theater my well be able to identify its maker, or its history, as a locksmith would identify that of a lock's mechanism. -=d=-
